Sometimes I wonder why these anthropomorphic figures on the capitals from the Romanesque to the Modern Age. Gargoyles and sculpted figures reflecting an iconography of fears and longings, of diabolical nightmares and mythological creatures interspersed with floral motifs and zoomorphic, as well as stories told in embossed and carved stone, designed to last an eternity … /

  1. A testament to the wealth of a city. Glasgow City has some beautiful buildings which were built when the city was a wealthy trading one.

The fine details on buildings were also for the owners (mainly tobacco merchants) to show off their wealth.

    • That is very interesting, Jane, but I wonder why many time they used to reproduce alegoric figures or others that represented the unkown or demons that surely would give nightmares to anyone. Or perhaps it was done to scare thieves? 😉

      Thanks for your comment,
